Travel Tips

Air

There is no airport in Dunfermline but Edinburgh International airport is only 15 miles away.  From the airport you can catch a bus to either to St Andrews bus station or to Haymarket train station.  The X54 or the city link service will take you direct to James Street bus station in Dunfermline and it will take between 40-60 minutes.  If you are travelling by train then a direct service runs from Haymarket to Dunfermline train station and the journey time is less than an hour.

Taxi

A taxi from Edinburgh airport will cost around £35-40 one way to the city centre.

Train

There are two train stations in Dunfermline, Dunfermline Town, which is located in the centre of the town, and Dunfermline Queen Margaret, which is located in the northeast of town, near Queen Margaret Hospital.  You can easily arrive at either station, although is you are doing sightseeing the Dunfermline Town station is perhaps the best.

The town centre is quite compact and most of the shops and attractions are best discovered on foot.  The high street is pedestrianised so walking is a necessity for exploring the shops.  There are buses available to take you out with the city centre, the main bus station is located outside the Kingsgate Centre on the north side of town.

By bus

Fife enjoys an excellent public transport service with routes covered mainly by national operator Stagecoach. A recent addition to the public transport system in Fife is the Ferrytoll Park and Ride service, which operates from a large, new car park just off the A90 a few hundred yards from the north approach to the Forth Road Bridge. Virtually every bus service from Fife to Edinburgh travels via Ferrytoll.
